despite having looked it over pretty carefully. i can't think of any way I could have identified the NA motor. I did do a compression check, and the numbers were around 170 and consistent, maybe a bit high for a TT but within the specs from the FSM. Oh, well, bite the bullet, do a motor freshen up (just cylinder hone and new bearings, fortunately), good used TT pistons with new rings, 40P heads with new EG intake valves and a good valve job. Should be strong and good for another 150k miles, at least. Thanks for all your tech support.
